Biography

Kaymakam Kemal Bey was an Ottoman governor born in Istanbul who was killed by Greek soldiers during the Menemen Massacre on June 17, 1919, in Menemen, where he served during World War I. Menemen was a town where Turkish and Greek populations lived together at the time, and it had been occupied by the Greeks on May 22, 1919. Kemal Bey opposed the occupation and lost his life in the massacre initiated by some Greek units retreating after the Battle of Pergamon. The incident was investigated by an Allied commission, and the refusal to allow Kemal Bey to be buried according to Islamic customs was met with outrage by the Turkish population. Menemen was liberated by the Turkish army on September 9, 1922, and in 1932, a monument was erected in his name, continuing the tradition of annual commemoration.
