Halkapınar Martyrs' Monument
About
It is also known as the Halkapınar Independence Martyrs' Memorial. It was built on the spot where four of the eight soldiers on foot were killed when they were fired upon from the Tuzakoğlu Flour Factory when they were shot at by Captain Şerafettin, who was leading the advance of the 4th Regiment of the 2nd Division of the Cavalry Corps under the command of Fahrettin Altay, during the liberation of İzmir from the enemy on September 9, 1922. The memorial commemorated the four soldiers who were shot dead when they were shot at from the Tuzakoğlu Flour Factory. Sergeant Mehmet, son of Bekir, from Akşehir; Sergeant İbrahim Hakkı, son of Ömer, from Antalya; Seyit Ahmet, son of Ahmet, from Nevşehir; and Veysi, son of Bekir, from İzmir were all martyred in the fire. Ahmet, son of Ahmet, from Nevşehir, was wounded and later taken to the hospital before reaching the rank of martyr. The street where our soldiers were martyred is today called "Martyrs' Avenue." The monument, erected at the site of their martyrdom, consists of a column on a pedestal in a small park, right next to the intersection where the road from Bayraklı meets Martyrs Avenue. The inscription "HOMELAND AND HONOR" is on the column.
